Think of hardwood flooring, and images of rough-hewn planks or precious herringbone are sure to spring to mind. To challenge that status quo, the Jamie Beckwith Collection has introduced the Enigma series of formats ranging from tile shapes, more commonly associated with ceramic or stone, to unusually ornamental strips. The 14 patterns are produced in walnut and quarter-sawn or plain white oak, all stained in one of six water-based, no-VOC colors and applied to a substrate of nine-ply Baltic birch.

Stella was inspired by a starry sky. Another celestial reference is Crescent, though it resembles more of an hourglass. In Lotus, fanlike blossoms taper into slender stems. A dark circle punctuates square Dice. And the undulating strips of Wave come in five lengths. Lead times are short, custom orders a cinch. 615-254-1937; jamiebeckwithcollection.com.

Inspiration and Findings at the 2012 Antiques and Garden Home Show of Nashville

Collective C O L O R : February 10th – 12th, 2012

Here’s a few snapshots from the Antiques and Garden HomeShow of Nashville that we captured along the way, perusing through the manyantiques dealers that were present. This is the shows 22^nd year andover 150 dealers from all over the country had booths showing their wares.

Among the selections we noticed some 20^th centuryDanish modern pieces mixed in with the older antiques. Many of the horticulturebooths emphasized bringing the outdoors in through use of garden furniture,planters, and iron décor. We also noticed an emergence of religious art as wellas the use of deep colors and pops of yellow.

I have just returned from an amazing trip to New York where the Enigma Collection was honored as Interior Design Magazine's Best of the Year Flooring. We were nominated for the Green Flooring category. The event was held in the IAC Building, a spectacular structure built by architect, Frank Gehry. The awards were announced by Editor in Chief to a standing room only of 900 of the finest design firms and architects in the world.

What drew you to the architectural and design industry? Is that original fascination still alive within you today?

As a young person I would devour books on architecture, art and design. Through the books and publications I found comfort and creativity. I would visualize and create my own personal environments after being inspired by other architects and designers work on the pages.

My original fascination is definitely alive and thriving. As I venture into different areas of design with product development and manufacturing, I am constantly learning, inspired and renewed.

Tell us about your typical day (at work and at home).

My days are definitely very busy, just like any working mothers would be. I have three young children with busy social lives, numerous charity organizations that my husband and I participate in, and of course, family and friend obligations. The wonderful thing about a rich life is the amazing relationships that develop in addition to the inspiring people that I come into contact with.

My day is not altogether typical, which is very exciting to me. It is never the same. Usually I am in the design studio by 9 am meeting with my team. We discuss all of our current projects, from design to scheduling to purchasing. I also have a retail showroom that is always being updated with new furniture pieces and accessories so we plan for upcoming seasons and new purchases.

I try to visit our production facilities, where we manufacture a collection of surfacing materials, at least 3 times a week. When I am there, I meet with the sales team and also enjoy working on the actual assembly line. It is very therapeutic and allows me to be with the people that are creating the beautiful products.

In your opinion, what are the key challenges in designing a residence (as compared to a commercial project)?

One of the challenges in designing a residential project is there are a lot of emotions involved. You usually have a couple that have poured a lot of time and money into the project so emotions run high. I feel it is our responsibility to listen to the client or clients and be organized, efficient and timely in our services. Good organization and especially budgeting can help a client feel less stress as they have a true picture of the process and the costs involved.

Tell us about your own home.

My own home is my muse. I love to try unique things out in my home. I like to challenge myself to create new designs or architectural features such as acrylic wine cellars, glass floors and the unusual mixing of pattern and shape through fabric or furniture.

I encourage the artisans and sub contractors to stretch outside of their normal thinking process to try to create interiors that are spectacular, not only in beauty but functionality. My home is a perfect spot to entertain my imagination.

As an architect/ designer, what do you think defines an inviting home?

An inviting home is a home that embodies the love and spirit of the people that live there, period.

High End Floor Trends

Dark stained or ebony floors have been a hot trend for the past several years. High gloss dark floors are becoming more popular for their sophisticated mirror-like finish.

Blog 2 Modern via

Another high end flooring trend is textured wood flooring. From crocodile to distressed to shaped puzzle pieces, high end wood floors are not strictly planks anymore.

Houzz via

A high end designer trend in flooring is boldly patterned painted floors. These aren’t country style rustic solid painted floors. Patterns range from chevrons to octagons and medallions.

Reynolds Still via

Herringbone floors are becoming popular…again. Antique wood herringbone floors can be found in French Chateaus dating back hundreds of years. Many of these floors are being reclaimed and repurposed into newer homes to give them authenticity.

Houzz via

The high end patterned flooring trend is easily seen in tile floors. Colorful cement Moroccan tiles are in high demand and are seen in both traditional and online shelter magazines.

Studium NYC via

High end stone floors are also joining the pattern trend. These inlaid marble and limetone tiles from Studium NYC are based on the designs of David Hicks, the master of geometric patterns.

Kelly G Design via

The chevron stripe is a hot trend in all aspects of interior design right now. It is a classic pattern from the Art Deco era that is enjoying a comeback. You could even say the herringbone wood floors are really a chevron pattern. Here is a marble floor laid out in a contrasting chevron.

Baller Toys via

At the stratosphere level of high end flooring trends are diamond inset tiles. The tiles from Pietra Firma each have over 1000 diamonds, 2400 pieces of mother-of-pearl, 400 pieces of abalone shell and 500 pieces of black onyx. Price per square meter? One million dollars. We're always thinking about ceiling light fixtures—wonder what a sparkling crystal chandelier would do for diamond inset tiles.

Geodes In Design

While traveling over the last few weeks, I have been inspired by all the beautiful agates and geodes that are showing up in design. Not only are they appearing in interior design, but fashion, jewelry and home accessories. Some pieces are sliced and polished, some are raw and rough in texture; clearly they are all organic, and quite sexy.

So.....I thought to myself, why not include these amazingly natural phenomenons with my dimensional wood wall tiles, Projection. The combination is striking! Again, the organic, smooth warmth of the wood works wonderfully with the rough and colorful geodes. Every single piece is unique, a true piece of art.

Each geode is hand selected and designed to coordinate with the finish and wood species. Finally, a gold gilt is added to complete the look. Jewelry for the walls!

Sometimes we become so focused on all that is in front of us, we neglect to notice what’s under our feet.

A beautiful array of design techniques could change that.

“Today’s homeowners are looking for durability, a product that will hold up with the wear and tear of everyday living, and something unique and distinguished that will fit within their budget,” says Jamie Beckwith, principal designer with Beckwith Interiors and creator of The Jamie Beckwith Collection.

“Enigma is an engineered hardwood floor tile that can be used where traditional plank wood flooring cannot or it can be used as an accent,” Beckwith says.

“Additionally, our three-fourth inch Mosaic tile is thicker than most traditional wood plank floors, providing a thicker wear layer. Homebuilders should consider a flooring product’s longevity, endurance and ease of cleaning,” Beckwith adds. “Flooring can set the tone for the entire interior and having a special flooring product can really make a home distinctive.”

Choose from bamboo, cork, distressed and cosmetically-treated woods, as well as familiar and traditional flooring options. Most of these choices fall within two groups in today’s flooring trends.

“The first is low-cost, commodity goods,” says Rick Merwin, president of Fontenay. “These are inexpensive goods that look good and perform. They are mostly mass-produced, durable, and somewhat stylish, easily installed and fit mainstream design needs for long-term style and service needs.”

“The second group is custom and unique goods,” Merwin says. “Typically hand-made, they often cost considerably more but offer something of a very different value. These products are generally lifetime purchases and don’t go out of style. When maintained properly, they wear well and ultimately cost the same as their lesser counterparts when comparing longevity.”

As consumers, homeowners are becoming increasingly more aware of our environment and desire the use of earth-friendly materials within their home. Many flooring companies incorporate this trend. Nic Neumann, CEO and president of Mafi America, Inc., believes natural wood floors can be composed to suit every specific room within a home making every living space an artistic place.

“Our deep understanding of nature and our careful treatment of the wood enable us to give our floors the quality of works of art,” Neumann adds. “Even during production we take the distinctive identity of the wood into consideration. We use the whole tree, working with an awareness of its natural growth and create unique works of art to walk on. Mankind lives on all four corners of the globe. Individuality is his being and desire. Our art is preparing the basis. Wherever you want to relax, feel well or recreate, it is always nice to have wooden floors that regulate humidity and create a healthy atmosphere.”

With so many unique flooring materials and options available for today’s homeowners, why stop at the floor? Why not use them on walls and ceilings too? How about an accent table? The design possibilities are endless for creating a distinctly pleasant experience for our eyes and our feet.

I wanted to share with you a few patterns from the Enigma collection. The first image is of Wave, our engineered floor, awaiting stain and finish at our factory. This beautiful floor will be traveling to Dallas to the Renaissance Tile and Bath Showroom, where it will be placed in the entrance of the showroom. I will post pictures of the finished floor installed as soon as I receive them. It has been so exciting, to see my idea, of patterned flooring come to fruition over the past 3 years. I always try to remember how blessed I am. I have a wonderful husband that loves me dearly, 3 healthy, beautiful children, a thriving business and family and friends that mean the world to me. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in our busy lives and we forget how many are suffering or may be in need of our love and support.

The St. Jude Dream Home is coming to Westhaven in Franklin Tennessee and Beckwith Interiors is proud to donate the tile from the Jamie Beckwith Collection that will be used in the Butlers Pantry of the 3,300 square foot house. This home not only serves as a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community, it serves as a reminder of how serious cancer is and how it can change the lives of a family in a heart beat.

Knowing what St. Jude strives to accomplish, and understanding its dedication to helping sick children has enlightened everyone involved with the project. This is an initiative that has quickly captured the hearts of Southern Land Company, who is building the home and all of its partners.

Becky Harris, writer for Houzz website, included a wonderful story about the design inspirations for my pool house. The pool house was an addition to our home and took about 2 years to complete. It was a long and sometimes frustrating project, but it was well worth it and brings my family much enjoyment. Because this was my own personal space, I felt I could take more risks with this space, try things that I had never done before, and push the limits a bit. I was so excited to see the Sextant pattern used on an HGTV episode of "Candice Tells All". The wood tiles looked fabulous on the fireplace that Canadian designer, Candice Olson designed. I was inspired to see how she used the product and how it brought warmth and beauty to the fireplace. Again, I am extremely honored that she included the wood tiles on her show......I have to pinch myself!

2010, An Amazing Year!

After reflecting on 2010, I have realized what progress and exciting developments happened for Beckwith Interiors along with the Jamie Beckwith Collection throughout the year. I am truly blessed to have so many supporters in the design field that have helped to spread the word about my companies. I can not take all the credit for all of the different projects and ideas that we can come up with so I have to thank all my colleagues at BI for all their hard work and passion. I love what I do, I am excited to wake up everyday and go to work, and I am looking forward to 2011 and all the opportunities of the new year!

Here is the past year in a quick glimpse......

January, kicked the year off with a spot light on the flooring line, Jamie Beckwith Collection in Better Homes and Gardens, Beautiful Kitchens.

February brought the issue of Wine Spectator, which featured the designs of our wine cellars. One more traditional and one more modern.

March brought a wonderful project with a great couple that have such amazing vision. We loved this project and hope to see it featured soon!

April was an exciting month as Beckwith Interiors designed and decorated for the TJ Martell Foundations, Best Cellars Dinner at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville. What a great charity to be involved in! Country Musics greatest artists and the countries best wine collectors get together to raise money for Aids, Cancer and Leukemia.

We were proud to be able to provide lighting for ABC's Extreme Home Makeover! The Lighthouse Preschool was rebuilt after being destroyed by the historic floods in Nashville.

Much love and holiday spirit was exchanged in December as we continue to say thanks to our friends and clients for the past year. Most importantly, December was a month for family and close friends. I am again truly blessed for being able to enjoy my work but most fortunate to have a wonderful husband who supports me and loves me even when I am grouchy and moody and children who think I am pretty, funny and a generally cool mom. xoxox much love!

Beetles, butterflies and geological species that don't even seem real, their colors are so bright and magical. When speaking with Mr. Marley, who by the way was a total gentleman, and quite handsome, explained how his fascination with insects was inspired by the desperation to avoid them. We are happy to showcase a few pieces from market.....

Something Different for Nashville

We are so excited to have a wonderful new rug line, Tamarian, showcased at our showroom. Tamarian rugs are transitional in design and not as traditional and formal as many collections presented throughout Nashville. I love Oushaks, Kermans and anything antique, but this gives designers and shoppers a different look that is hard to sometimes find in Nashville. If you are looking for a transitional rug that is made in Nepal with beautiful quality, these are definitely worth looking at. The rugs come in 4x6 and go up to 10x14 for in stock designs, but the great thing about this collection is that you can design your shape, pattern and color. The rugs can be made with silk and wool or just wool, depending on the look and your budget. Anyone Can Do It!!!

Projection, a wood product that we manufacture was featured on the DIY network television show about 2 months ago. We received many calls asking how to purchase the wall material and one of the main questions was, "Is it difficult to install?" Well, one viewer in Jacksonville, Florida saw the product and decided it would look good in his home. After shipping him the product, we gave him installation instructions and asked him if he was going to use a professional installer. He politely replied, "Nope, I am going to do this for my wife and I want to make sure that it goes up before Thanksgiving. That will make her very happy." No problem, we said.

Just about a month after the product was sent, this gentleman was kind enough to send a phone picture of the wall that he installed himself. Check it out! It is gorgeous! We are thrilled with his results and called to see what he thought about the product and the installation. He said, "All my friends think it is great that I did it myself. It's just so easy and looks so cool!"

We couldn't have said it any better :)

While traveling to Washington D.C. this past month, I stayed in a lovely hotel, The Jefferson. What a beautiful property! Such classic architecture, attention to detail and smart finishes. While there my husband and I enjoyed a dinner at the French Ambassadors Home. Another Wow! Unfortunately, no pictures of that. But I did want to share the images of the suite that we stayed in while at the Jefferson. I was fortunate enough to meet Mrs. Connie Milstein, the owner and designer of the hotel. She said, "I designed the hotel for Thomas Jefferson and if he were alive and could stay anywhere, the Jefferson would be his choice." President Jefferson was a huge wine collector, very sophisticated and had a love of all things french, which the Jefferson emulates beautifully. http://www.jeffersondc.com/

It is officially time to rework my family room and like any other person deciding what direction to move the interior in, I am struggling with so many options. Even interior designers can get overwhelmed, especially when the project is personal. I have gone back and forth with the design, and initially thought that the room would be more about the shapes of the furniture with neutral backgrounds and focus on texture, but have since decided to have a little fun with texture, pattern and clashing colors. These images are inspirational to me. I love the jewel tones, with many patterns and an unusual color palette. What do you think?? These ottomans are great for putting your feet up, a pop of color under consoles or in front of a cozy fireplace. Summer time travels

I feel rejuvenated and inspired after a week trip to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I know you are probably thinking Vegas and L.A....?? Not exactly the most cultural road trip, but it depends on where you go and what you see; and see we did. First, the weather in LA is not to be believed. As usual, 75 degrees and dry, clear skies. A perfect day for visting the Getty museum. The Getty is absolutely amazing! The museum has so many beautiful outdoor gardens and sculptural gardens in addition to the clear views all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The buildings are separated into different sections based on the collections they are housing so you can walk between them and enjoy the outdoor cafes. We took our children and they were excited to see some of the artworks that they recognized. It was great to see my daughter run up to a beautiful pastel colored canvas of haystacks and exclaim, "Look mom, Monet's Haystacks." While I would love to take credit for my cultural superior children, all the kudos goes to Baby Einstein DVD videos. They were plunked in front of those so many times something had to stick. Renoir, Degas and Van Goghs's Irises were inspiring. There was that amazing purple again that we are seeing in so many interiors.

Getty Museum

Between the outdoor cafes on sunset, lovely Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills and the flowers in bloom it was relaxing and pretty.

Wow! I love these amazing creations by Barbara Houston. Lighting, accessories, jewerly and wall hangings all made with semi precious stones, minerals and fossils. So beautiful! I hope that Beckwith Interiors will have some in the showroom sometime soon.

Inspired London design

I am getting ready to book a trip to London with my husband in August. We both have similiar tastes in hotels; luxurious, pampering, good location, and most importantly well kept and clean. When we are traveling to jolly old England, we like to stay at the hip boutique hotels that are much more interesting than the larger hotels, like the Ritz or the Four Seasons.(which we love) One particular hotel group that stands out is the Firmdale group. www.Firmdalehotels.com We had our taste of these great hotels many years ago when we stayed at the Covent Garden Hotel. Kit Kemp, the designer behind these great interiors brings her unique sense of color and whimsy to all of the Firmdale properties. I especially like the Soho and the Haymarket, which we visited about 2 years ago. I hope you enjoy a little taste of London! Wow! The images just make you smile!

Wood

After witnessing all the flooding here in Nashville over the last 2 days you come to appreciate a warm dry home. It is scary how quickly "mother nature" takes over and can reek havoc on our domiciles. Wood is so prevalently used in design, from the framing of the house, to flooring, cabinetry and furniture. Unfortunately for many, water and wood do not mix. One product that we manufacture, the Arbor collection of wooden bathtubs and sinks are quite the opposite. These beautiful sinks and bathtubs do mix with water and they mix quite well. Finished with over 20 coats of marine epoxy they are finished similarly to a boat. Crafted here in Nashville Tennessee of walnut and birds eye maple they are truly a work of art.

Prayers and well wishes go out to the families who are dealing with the high waters and trying to protect what is most likely their most prized possession, their home.

This dining room shows how impactful bright colors can be. The strong chartreuse color on the wall draws you in and highlights the art and unique light fixture.
